The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar each year. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the 8th month is the second month of autumn, which was historically referred to as "Zhongqiu" (Mid-Autumn). It is also known as "Qiu Xi" (Autumn Evening), "August Festival", "August Half", "Moon Evening", and "Moon Festival". Because the moon is full on this day, symbolizing reunion, it is also called the "Reunion Festival". Traditional customs during the Mid-Autumn Festival include eating mooncakes, admiring the moon, appreciating osmanthus flowers, and solving lantern riddles.
