Water and Land City Gate
In 514 BC, Wu Zixu, under the command of the King of Wu, built a grand and magnificent city called Helu, which featured eight ancient city gates for both land and water. After enduring the ravages of time, seven of these gates were destroyed, leaving only the Panmen gate preserved. Today, it is the only well-preserved dual city gate for both land and water in the world, becoming a symbol of the ancient city of Suzhou and the emblem of Suzhou City. It was also included as a heritage site in the first batch of the application for World Cultural Heritage status for the Grand Canal of China in 2014.
